I am looking for a Deep Clear Coat

Whitesmithing

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone knows what to use on a flame painted copper piece that will give me a Very Deep Shine. I want something that I can either spray on or dip and something that does not use a seperate hardner and does not "yellow."
Any help is Greatly Appreciated!
Thank you

copper clear coat

I have been very happy with Rustoleum Furniture Lacquer. I get it on-line, or at Home Depot. comes in a green and white can. I have used it on copper sculptures installed at synagogues. Looks great!

Deep Clear

Joe,
Not sure how deep a clear you really want but I love the lacquers because great for outdoor pieces from:
http://www.finish1.com/
I buy the 11565 in bulk and then use either a spray gun or one of those little glass jars with the aerosol. they also have it in spray cans through a couple of distributors, just call them.
I have found though that no matter what you use over flame colored metal the color will fade after a few years.
To make a deeper clear look I like to wax the piece. I use Butchers Bowling Alley wax. Great stuff.

Deep Clear Coat

Warren,

Thanks for the resource on the Lacquer, but where do you find Bowling alley wax?
I did not know the color would fade on flame colored copper.
I did stumble across a product on

http://store.electrical-insulators-and-copper-ground-bars.com/coppershield.html

This is what it says about their spray:

"This coating is specially formulated for use on copper, and actually enhances the natural beauty of new copper. It contains no substances that will react chemically with copper. Copper Shield® is crystal clear, and formulated from a blend of acrylic resins specifically designed for use on copper. Copper Shield® also contains a UV inhibitor that prevents darkening due to sunlight exposure, and an agent to prevent corrosion from occurring underneath the paint. Normal clear enamel or lacquer paints will not prevent the aging of copper. Copper Shield® will protect the new copper for a period of up to 10-12 years in an exterior application."

A 12oz spray can is $32.50 so it is quite expensive. I just don't know which is the best route to go, but for some projects I am looking for the Really Deep Shine and that is what I was asking about.

Warren, I just have to say, WoW!! I am a Big fan of your work, I have been wanting to build a tree and you have the BEST trees that I have seen!! I have no idea how you built the apples so perfect and got the color perfect too. I have a lot to learn and I would love to take one of your classes but I live in NC.

Thanks for the info, sorry for the long thread.

Thanks,
Copperjoe

Butchers

Copperjoe,
Little late on getting back to you about the Butchers. I buy mine at the local HWI hardware. Not sure if Aco or Ace carry it. But can also order on line if you just search the name. The name fools a lot of people but it is also made for metal and I am a very big user of it.

Thanks for the compliments on my work. All it takes is practice practice and an open mind.

Lacquer

Hi Cynthia,

I was just reading your answer. I am looking for a clear coat seal to go over a jewelry piece. It can't ruin the paper.

Would this lacquer work for that do you think?

Clear coat

I am a new user to this site. I am still getting aquainted with the site. I use a product called permalac. I have had it on outdoor metal for several years and it is holding up well at an elevation of 8,000 ft. so our uv is harsh. It comes in gloss or satin. Easy to work with and I also will wax over it. I get it at sulptdepot.com
