Whitesmithing | Repousse & Chasing | Artmetalists copper | metal | patterns Hi, I make a lot of flowers out of copper and have always created my own patterns through trial and error. I was wondering if anyone knew of a book or something where I could see some patterns of different flowers, objects, shapes ,etc. Is there such a program to where you can take a 3d shape or picture and flatten it out to get a cut pattern? Just wondering if everyone makes their patterns like I do or are you doing something different. » read more | 18 comments Bandsaw blade for copper

Whitesmithing | Artmetalists bandsaw | blade | copper | cutting Hi all, I have been trying to find a bandsaw blade for my vertical bandsaw and have not had any luck. I called my local metal supplier and he could not find what I needed either, so I was wondering if anyone knew of somewhere I could find what I am looking for. I am cutting 1" thick copper (about 25 30ga.sheets stacked)and I need a 1/4" blade 92"long with 6tpi. I am trying to cut out multiple patterns at once and the blade that I got from Lowe's just won't stand up to the job. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! » read more | 10 comments Polishing Copper

Whitesmithing | Repousse & Chasing | Artmetalists abstract | brass | copper | sculpture | swimmer This is a commissioned sculpture. The client wanted a abstract sculpture of a swimmer so this is what my wife and I came up with. This was my first abstract piece and I am not sure if I like it or not. The client was very happy with it, so I guess that is all that matters. Let me know what you guys think and don't hold back because I can take constructive criticism, that's how we learn. » read more | 4 comments Commercial Patina Products for Copper

Whitesmithing commercial | copper | patina Hi All, I would like to start a discussion on Commercial Patina Products for Copper. I know that there have been a lot of post on this subject but I would like to have everyone's opinions and experiences with certain products. What product works best for you? There are so many products on the market now that I get very confused about which one I should order. There are also dyes and not ever seeing these in person is really hard to figure out what they look like. Are dyes better than traditional patinas? What is the best way to apply them? Hot or cold patina, cold or hot copper? What is the best way to clean your copper before adding the patina? Is one Pickle better than the other? What is the best clear coat to put on your project to keep the patina from flaking off? » read more | 12 comments Planishing

Whitesmithing copper | hammer | planishing Hi, I have recently been commisioned to do a Firefighter's garden style weather vane. Part of my design is to build a fireman's helmet which I have done. My problem is that I have not really done any planishing before and I would like to get all the little hammer marks and hills and valleys out of the helmet so that it is very smooth. Please let me know if anyone could tell me how to do this. I don't have a pitch bowl or english wheel and it is too late to get one now because the deadline is approching very soon. » read more | 12 comments cutting out multiple patterns

Whitesmithing copper | cutting | pattterns Hi, I have searched this site and have not found an answer to my question so I thought that I would ask all the talented people here. My question is, "What is the best most economical and fastest way to cut multiple patterns?" I am working with 30ga. copper. I have a small shop and I have been cutting my patterns out one at a time with heavy duty scissors by tracing the pattern each time. I have also tried placing about 5 layers of copper sandwiched between thin plywood and cut it out on my scrollsaw. The problem with that is, I can't find any metal cutting scrollsaw blades. I went through 8 spiral blades and cut out 2 flower petals which would really be 10 petals total; it only took 1-1/2hrs! » read more | 8 comments Patina

Whitesmithing copper | patina Hi, I have bought the green patina from Jax chemicals and am not having very good results. In every way that I apply it, it keeps flaking off...very badly. I have tried heating my copper then soaking it in muriatic acid and water, then dipping it in baking soda and water then finally rinse with plain water. After that I apply my patina with a brush working it into the copper and then let it dry. After it dries all the patination is flaking up so badly that I can not spray it. » read more | 9 comments I am looking for a Deep Clear Coat

Whitesmithing new member Hi all, I am new to this site and to the blog world in general. I am also fairly new to coppersmithing. I have been dabbling in copper for about a year and a half now and I really love it! I have learned Everything that I know through trial and error, going to shows, searching the net and reading books. I have made a LOT of mistakes but have learned SO much through it. I have a website and have been selling a few pieces, just enough to cover the cost of material and a few tools. If anyone would like to view my work and give me feedback on it, I would appreciate it. My site is www.carolinacoppercreations.com, I am looking forward to learning from you guys and also sharing my experiences with you in hopes that you will benefit from it too. » read more | 3 comments |
