just finished

Hi all,
Just wanted to share a recently completed project. this is for a residence hear on the central coast california. about 35 lineal feet, sculpted and cast bronze posts, forged and riveted steel railings with a deep brown finish (c-22 and lots of water). Also the flower arrangements are of steel, copper, and brass. with a rose theme carried threw the project, even the tops of the rivets on the pickets are little tiny roses. pickets are pierced through bottom bar and swaged, tops are drilled and riveted. hidden connections are bolted through posts into a pre-flooring baring plate topped with the bronze rose caps. fun stuff, lots of work, and honored to have the opportunity.

Super nice work, Matt. I

Super nice work, Matt.

I love the look, and really commend you on the detailing of the rivets, caps, etc. How did you manage to get around the ADA requirements for smooth top rails? I got dinged on that on one design I did a while back, so I'm curious. That's a look I really like and I was bummed when the inspector told me no go on it.

Hey Rich, thank you, Well

Hey Rich, thank you,
Well one saving grace on this project is that it is only 20" floor to floor (code for railing requirements in ca is 30"). there are also places that are over 4" spacing. but being a private residence and so on, there was some slack. on the other hand I did countersink the rivets on the stair hand rails, for the sake of comfort.

Thanks for explaining that,

Thanks for explaining that, Matt. It sure does look great and the connections are a big part of what makes it come together so well, visually. It's great that you have inspectors that seem to be sensible, too.

well I am knocking on wood

well I am knocking on wood though. I'd rather not test the inspectors, but some of the codes in place can be the death of art (and sensibility). although necessity is the mother of invention (or creativity in our case).

Absolutely beautiful and

Absolutely beautiful and full of the same music that the room holds there.  Sound vibrations and steel twirlings with the flowers of a muse fit in so well.   Love it and let the band play on.    bpfink

Congratulations Matt,
I too am curious about the inspection question...
Good job on making such clean connections throughout and the engineering prepwork and forethought that are required to make that happen.

Awesome work Matt. I

Awesome work Matt. I wondered what you had been up to lately. Did you make all the components? I am assuming yes, but had to ask?

Hey Nathan, good to here

Hey Nathan, good to here from you and thank you. the only thing I didn't fab is the set screws on the post to bottom bar connections hahaha. hows every thing in your neck of the woods?

Wow !

Great stuff,
I'll be a happy man if
a) I can hook a handrail commission as sweet as that, and b) I can execute it nearly as well as you have!

ps. C-22 ? What's that ?

Hi Will, thank you. c-22 is

Hi Will,
thank you. c-22 is a chemical made by triple s. its basically cold blueing, they call it bronze darkening or something like that. with this finish I kept the steel wet so that it would 'rust' instead of going black, as it will if you were to apply the product and then quickly dry it off and rub it back.

Hi Matt, the rail is

Hi Matt, the rail is stunning. I really like the design, the attention to the connections, and the coloring. Might be giving you a call in a month or so, I'm in the design/sell phase of a bronze railing and I think the coloring from your C-22 finish would be perfect.

Hope all is well out west
