Blacksmithing

i made these two axes yesterday. the botom one is supposed to be a viking axe and the top one is supposed to be a carpenters axe. i know the gum is an odd choice, but i wanted soemthing for scale. the eyes need to be bigger, but they are pretty good, i think. viking axe and carpenters hatchet

Your work is getting better

Your work is getting better all the time, Greg. I hate to tell you this, but gum won't prevent scale - you really need a reducing atmosphere for that. (GRIN)

What did you use for starting stock for those?

Thanks a ton! They are quite

Thanks a ton! They are quite a bit better then my first ones, and somebody already is interested in buying the carpenters hatchet! Yay! Money! LOL

I used 1in sqaure 1045 to make them both. Next time I may pony up for 1in sqaure S7 and see how that works out, but based on my experiance with it for tooling it will be a bear to forge out. I have used 4140, but i think it is overkill for a hatchet, unless you want really high preformance (hence the S7 experiment). I was forced to make some special tongs today to make making more hatchets easier (one to hold them by the eye, another to hold them by the bit).

Actually that gum does light on fire, but smells really bad ( acidentally spat it out on a project that was in the works today). My forge is pretty reducing, and maybe even adds some carbon. This may call for an experiment. (rubs hands toghthere with evil smile).

some updated pics of them. i

some updated pics of them. i just descaled and filed down the edge. i had some cold shuts in the edge of my viking axe, so filed them out instead of cutting off the bit and reworking it more.PhotobucketPhotobucket
