The past month here has been slow, but productive. Having more time than money will make a person go to great lengths to acquire the tools of the trade. I had an old set of cheap, cast steel body hammers that were pretty worthless, so I tried a couple of things. I tried facing the hammer with 309 stainless steel and sanding it down to a smooth finish. It looked great, no porosity in the weld metal, but the hammer face was not hard enough for planishing. So I cut out some small discs out of on old leaf spring and made my hammer with that. The sanding was tedious, as I did not anneal the carbon steel first, but the end result was worthy of my efforts. I also made some replaceable tips for my rawhide mallet, the kind with the cast iron head. I have a couple sets of hickory and one set of hard rubber, and once I can find a cheap source for delrin, I plan on making a couple of those too. Once I get a new digital camera, I will post some pictures of these tools, along with some work I have done with them.
