metals studio project

You and I both work in one of those wonderful almost magical places called a studio. The word itself brings visions to my mind. Some of those spaces are more meager than others, doesn't matter. The thing about them is that they evolve, change through time or grow. There is a romantic notion of what an artist studio is..Frankly i think the notion needs to meet the reality. I'm pretty sure that the studio of today greatly exceeds yesterdays notion. Your thoughts please. Pictures please. This just might be one of those expand your horizons kind of journeys. More later have to whip the learning curve. Brad

studios

I grew up in my father's studio. I've had four studios of my own, plus a small gallery in the early '90s. A gallery-music venue from 2000 thru 2004 called Detroit Art Space (look it up on you-tube, my former gallery partner, Ben Hernandez, started putting up some live music videos). I haven't been without a studio for more than a year. The studio is my life. I'm bring up my daughter the same way. I'll try to come up with some photos and give up some storie.

My many studios

When I first discovered sculpture I was fortunate enough to work out of a studio that had the vacilities for wood , stone and clay. After discovering metal it was now important to have my own studio. I had one studio in LIC Queens
which was a converted storage room. Needless to say I didn't get much work done there. Then I shared a studio with a sculptor/friend and it was great , but financially we brought in someone else. Then I gave up my share and paid for studio time. I bought a building in 1985 but couldn't have a studio there and it was a major thorn in my side. Here I own a building and work hard to pay the mortgage but don't have a workspace. I bitched about it for years. 10 years ago we bought property in Sullivan county N.Y. I now have my absolute dream studio. 3,600sq. feet and every day it develops into a better working space. I also have 24 acres with neighbors not too close to be annoyed by grinding etc. Sometimes I can work outside. It's my dream come true except I only work weekends unless I have a big impending commission. Soon I will live there full time. I can't tell you how important your own comfortable space can be. Janet
