Web site promotions

I am new to promoting my art work on-line. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? I know its not going to be as easy as posting a web site and waiting for the orders to come rolling in but what do I need to do to get an order at all? I have tons of people telling me that their friends sisters cousin put up a web site and are now making butt loads of money. I know that its not really going to happen like that but I also know that there are are plenty of people making a living selling their work on line. Is there a way to like websites with others without paying advertising fees or pay to promote sites? And are those pay to advertise sites really worth it?

Here's what I've learned from 5 years of using the internet to promote my work. The most important thing is to have a good site. This you already have, I checked it out. The next thing is to POST REGULARLY on several of the free social network sites, like facebook, flickr, Artmetal, deviatart etc.
Every time you post images of a piece on several sites ,they CROSS POLLINATE and it ups your chances of rising to the surface when someone does a Google search, which is how potential clients will find you.
Taking REALLY GOOD pictures of your work is essential. Also HOW YOU TITLE the piece is important because of the way stuff is categorized and filed on-line.So it's good to have several adjectives in front of the noun which describes your piece so that it is included in as many categories as possible in the on-line matrix.
The effort of cross posting is cumulative and takes awhile to have an effect, but after a couple of years of this regular effort you will start to come up on page one of Google searches, then other websites will contact you to ask if they can link with you.and it doesn't cost anything to link, but it helps both parties. It's good of course to link with other somewhat related businesses but ones that you don't necessarily compete with...
With the economy tanked as it is everything becomes more difficult. But the internet can work for you if you know how it works...
