New guy and my wares

Knife-makers

Hi yall. I'm the new guy so I thought I'd introduce myself with some of my skills. I am very much an amatuer knife maker, limited mainly by equipement. My forge is a cinder block on top of a steel plate with a hole and grate in the bottom and is fired by scrap hardwood. The metal and handles are made from scrap materials that most people through out, or leftovers from other projects. I lack a belt sander, but manage. The handle scales are usually made from old hardwood I get from shipping crates. I've been told its ash, but all I really know is it is hard to work with. I also have a small pile of rail road spikes I shape into knives and wrap in leather.

Thought I'd throw in a pic of my favorite knife so far. It was made for my cousin for Christmas, which is why its not in the other pic. He needed a good hunting knife. Hardwood (ash?) handles with copper tube rivets and treated with polyurethane for durability. I liked the way the stains looked on the blade, so I left them.

Welcom Angus, Your knives

Welcom Angus, Your knives and craftsman ship look nice. Great to see good work without lots of equipment, says a lot. I love Deviantart as well, sooooo much art on the site. Everytime I visit it I lose 2 hours, lol. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Knife making

I like your results. especially with limited tools! I started making blades 25 years ago, with about the same tools and matls.
A few helpful hints. Files are very good carbon steel! and they can be re-tempered easily, they are not usually any kind of modern alloy. Top quality steel that can make highest quality blades! I get them at flea markets, yard sales ect.
Just start a small wood fire, lay them in the coals, let it go for an hour, and take it out. or let the fire cool. You have annealed a fine tool steel. Work it soft. it will forge, grind, cut or? til you retemper it! That you'll do after every part is done, just before final assembly. This is a blade that is better than most stainless, and many newer alloys. Good luck!!!
