Short answer: Availabiliy of utility power. If you have a shop with 3-phase power, you are very fortunate. You can, generally, buy better large tools cheaper (used). If you don't, and you buy 3 phase tools, you have to build or buy a phase converter. I have seen equipment that is 3 phase that uses 190 volts to 800+ volts. Technically.... 3 phase power involves three hot leads. Single phase power involves one hot lead for 120 volts, and two hot leads for 240 volts. There is also 2 phase power, about which I know nothing except that it exists. |

Hi Andris, from what i
Hi Andris, from what i understand 3 Phase is mostly for commercial spaces and industrial tracts. Single phase 220V will be a much more versatile machine. Maybe for your first project with it you can build some sort of cage to lock up your new investment.
