business | change | progress So, since last I posted, a lot has changed. I have discovered my medium. It turns out to be metal. The last time I posted, I was trying it all out as a lark. Nothing serious. Just something to try because it seemed interesting. Now I see the world around me formed in metal. I have a new way of looking at the world, "That would look so awesome in metal." As for my first class in metal work, my first assignment was to make something out of a piece of 1' x 2' piece of 14 ga. cold rolled steel. I was paralyzed by a sudden lack of creativity, an absence of imagination. So, I solved the problem by solving problems. I decided to use as many tools that we were learning to use in order to create... well... something. I made a list of all the tools and possible ways I could use them. The blank metal formed itself into a 3-D scene with a sun/moon (that spins) behind two hills and a pine tree. At project review, my instructor said that he preferred art that was viewable from all angles but I regained points when I showed the sun/moon spin. Moving parts redeems single perspective work. The second project. Wow. Well, I just finished that one a couple of months ago. It needs to have its own blog post so I will end this one now. |
