The Beginning

| | |

Last Wednesday I attended my first class in Art Metal Design at a local community college. I'm taking the class from someone whose work I already respect, someone I trust as a teacher, someone who cares deeply about art.

What am I doing?

I'm still looking for my medium. I've been drawing twined designs since I was in Junior High and I've been studying Celtic art and design for almost 10 years. I buy and study books about drawing Celtic designs and I carry a pad of graph paper with me almost everywhere I go to sketch original designs or practice knots and keywork.

I've tried finding my medium for my finished designs. I've tried drawing and painting. I've explored wood-working, converting the designs to on-loom bead-weaving pieces, or converting my designs to cross-stitch. Nothing has connected for me.

When I think about Celtic design-work, metal is a natural fit. It feels like a good fit for both my style of work and for me.

I'm excited and scared about this new opportunity and have decided to become obsessed about metal art, hence, my search for online information. Finding an online community in the craft that I hope to immerse myself in is really amazing.

Thanks.

Cheers,

AJ
